Pi has released several technical updates to KYC and Mainnet migration processes that address specific KYC application corner cases, improve verification processes, and help eligible Pioneers who were previously unable to progress.
KYC and Mainnet migration involve many different checks designed to allow genuine Pioneers to progress while preventing bad actors, bots and those with policy violations. While most Pioneers move through these processes continuously, certain groups can become stuck because of specific corner cases that require additional evaluation or custom technical solutions.
Resolving a Duplicate-Account KYC Corner Case
Pi has refined the process used to evaluate a KYC corner case involving Pioneers whose accounts were flagged for possible duplication. Over 417,000 Pioneers are now able to move forward in the KYC process following further evaluation that confirmed they are not duplicates.
Note this does not replace other applicable KYC requirements and checks, which affected Pioneers must still satisfy.
This update is one example of why some groups of Pioneers may be unblocked from KYC or migration in batches rather than continuously. In certain corner cases, distinguishing genuine Pioneers from bad actors or those with policy violations can require additional analysis and custom technical solutions. Different groups may be blocked for different reasons, and once a solution for a particular issue is developed, tested, and released, the affected Pioneers can move forward.
Resolving Mainnet Migration for Pioneers with Fast-track Wallets
Some Pioneers got their Mainnet wallet through the Fast-Track process which later served as the destination wallets for Mainnet migration. Because these wallets were not created in the traditional route of the standard KYC and migration process, these Pioneers have not been able to claim their migration balance because they did not have a sufficient Pi balance to cover the required gas fee.
Within the next week, an update will be deployed to unblock 497,000 Pioneers who are currently stuck due to this issue, and prevent the occurrence for future similar cases by reconciling the gap between the two KYC routes that lead to migration.
Additional KYC and Mainnet Migration Improvements
A number of additional improvements addressing specific issues across KYC and migration have also been released:
- Optimized technical processes that lead to fewer errors: Technical improvements have been made to the KYC app in how machine learning models for video processing and other automated KYC processes use system resources. These changes address cases where high processing demands could cause errors and contribute to KYC application stagnation.
- KYC resubmission for affected Yoti users: Some Pioneers who used the initial Yoti KYC process became stuck because required liveness-check data was missing. Affected Pioneers can now resubmit their KYC request to complete the missing information.
- Expand device eligibility for liveness check: Pi has adjusted the logic used for liveness checks and the capture of different face angles. This expands eligibility to Pioneers using older or lower-spec mobile devices that previously could not successfully complete these checks due to device limitations.
- Palm-print capture for additional authentication: For a 1 month trial period, Palm-print capture is enabled for some Pioneers who are required to complete multiple liveness checks. This feature is on a gradual rollout. The additional authentication data can help verify genuine Pioneers and support the resolution of tentative KYC status. Palm prints provide another way to support human-authenticity verification while offering a different form of privacy preservation because the method does not require showing a face.
- Resubmission for affected Indonesian ID holders: Pioneers in Indonesia who were rejected after submitting a KIA ID (which is no longer valid for KYC) can now resubmit using another supported ID.
These updates continue Pi’s ongoing work to address specific KYC and Mainnet migration corner cases, helping eligible Pioneers continue progressing while maintaining the checks needed to distinguish genuine, human participants.
Pioneers are encouraged to complete liveness checks when prompted, open the KYC app to see if they can resubmit, and try claiming their Pi again if a previous attempt failed due to insufficient funds to cover the gas fee.
